What is SolidWorks®?

SolidWorks® is a computer-aided design (CAD) and computer-aided engineering (CAE) software that runs on Microsoft Windows. The software is offered by Dassault Systèmes, a European multinational software company that develops product lifecycle management (PLM), and 3D design solutions. SolidWorks® facilitates a parametric feature-based approach used for creating solid models and assemblies. Written on Parasolid-kernel, the software supports 2D and 3D modeling for a wide range of products for the mechanical / automotive industry. Currently, more than 165,000 companies worldwide use the SolidWorks® software.

What is the difference between CATIA® and SolidWorks®?

CATIA® and SolidWorks® both are offered by Dassault Systèmes, and used for solid modeling. The difference between the two lies in functionalities and capabilities.

CATIA®, Dassault’s flagship product, is a PLM, i.e. product lifecycle management solution supports the entire product development process, thus allowing users to see the finished product. On the other hand, SolidWorks® is a CAD and CAE software that primarily allows users to design and engineer products. In order to perform CAM with SolidWorks, users need to install third party software like SolidCAM. CATIA is more high-end with its features, and allows users to produce a complete factory when SolidWorks is apt to design a car. Both products coming from Dassault, are immensely robust in working. Those who haven’t learnt any of these software products must go for SolidWorks® first and then progress to CATIA®. To enroll or enquire more, please write in at
