    ITIL®, i.e. Information Technology Infrastructure Library, is a set of globally accepted practices that are used for aligning IT services with business needs. Generalized processes, procedures, and checklists are defined by ITIL® which in turn let organizations lay a baseline for IT Service Management. In other words, ITIL® is a framework that defines best practices to be used in IT environments for driving business transformation and growth.

    The ITIL® Qualification Scheme consists a set of qualifications based on various ITIL® best practices. The ITIL® framework gives a structured approach to the Service Management profession, wherein each certification validates an individual’s ability related to a separate discipline. Following are the certification levels in ITIL® Qualification scheme:

    • ITIL® Foundation Level
    • ITIL® Intermediate Level
    • ITIL® Expert Level
    • ITIL® Master Level

    ITIL® Service Lifecycle comprises of five stages, which are described as follows:

    • Service Strategy: Service Strategy phase is also commonly referred to as Strategy Management. During the Service Strategy phase, companies decide the markets they need to target and also devise strategies to be followed in order to be different from competitors. Factors, such as costs incurred and potential risks are also calculated during this phase in order to have a smooth decision-making process.
    • Service Design: During this phase of ITIL Service Lifecycle, assistance is provided to those processes which are developed during the strategy phase. There is learning about designing service plans that are used for the purpose of addressing concerns raised by customers.
    • Service Transition: In this phase, candidates learn to manage the changes that take place during the Service Design phase. This phase additionally involves tasks related to managing effective and efficient transition of services into operations.
    • Service Operation: This phase is the most practical phase of the ITIL® Service Lifecycle. Primary task undertaken during this phase is to ensure successful delivery of services to customers with as minimal disruptions as possible. The Service Operation phase is the only phase that is valued at both levels, i.e. customers and service providers.
    • Continual Service Improvement: The door to improvisation is always open, especially wherever technology is concerned. For identification of the improvement areas, continual assessments have to be undertaken. CSI is the phase where continual assessments of services take place.

    ITIL® 2011 is the latest version of ITIL® core publlications. The ITIL® 2011 version replaced ITIL® v3, which was released in 2007. This is the reason behind the confusion between ITIL® v3 and ITIL® 2011. ITIL® 2011® version did not introduce new concepts, and only made the existing content of ITIL® v3 better. Hence, ITIL 2011® is the improved version of ITIL v3, as well as the only version available for ITIL® Foundation Exam.

    Due to the global recognition, ITIL® examinations have been translated into various languages, such as Arabic, Brazilian, Portuguese, Chinese (Simplified), Czech, Danish, Dutch, Finnish, French, German, Hungarian, Italian, and Japanese. Hence candidates can take exams in their preferred language.

    ITIL® Foundation certification exam follows a multiple choice question format and comprises of 40 questions with no negative marking. To pass this exam, one has to answer 26 questions correctly out of the 40, i.e. equivalent to 65%. Duration for completing the exam is 60 minutes; however, one can request for 75 minutes, in case English is not the native language of the candidate appearing for the exam.

    No, IT background is not mandatory however some knowledge is helpful. Though, those who do not belong to IT background will still be able to understand concepts and take the examination.
